The first material selected for the original Diodable 2024 collection. Durian wood is classified as a hardwood due to it's high density, strength, durability & is mainly harvested from Malaysian orchards & plantations but can also be found in Burma & Indonesia.
We spent countless hours researching what would be the best material for our frames & ultimately decided on Durian due to it's superb properties;
Durian Tree :
Durian wood is derived from the durian tree (Durio spp., Neesia spp., Bombax spp., Coelostegia spp., Kostermansia spp.), which belongs to the Bombacaceae family. It is a large tree that can grow up to 50 metres (165 feet) in height, with a clear trunk reaching 30 meters in length and 1-2 meters in diameter.
Local names include Derian, duriat, dian, dulian, dulen, rulen durene, tureno, turian, jatu, kadu (Indonesia), punggai (Malaysia), bengang (Neesia spp., Sarawak).
The bark of the durian tree varies in color from brown to dark red and sheds irregularly. The heartwood of durian wood exhibits a pink-brown to deep red-brown hue, while the sapwood is lighter and distinct in most species. Durian is an evergreen tree meaning the plant/foliage remains green and functional all year round, through more than one growing season. The fruit of the tree is harvested in October/November.
Wood Harvesting :
Durian wood is one of the most sustainable woods on the earth as it's only harvested when the tree is no longer economic (stops producing fruits), this usually takes about 30 years, making the wood quite exotic. Once a tree is felled, it is quickly replanted ensuring the cycle can continue.
Wood Durability :
As previously mentioned, Durian wood has excellent durability, rating 4 on a 6 scale measurement (indentation); classed as great. Our particular wood has a timber grade of F22 which is the highest rating possible for this wood (pine only rates around F5/F8). Durian is known around the world for it's premium quality and durable, longevity. Not only this but it boasts remarkable resistance to decay so rest assured your artwork will be with you for generations.
Durian is susceptible to termite infestations, so we took preventative measures by treating your Durian wood with the best provisions obtainable, to be certain that your artwork will be safe in the occasion of an attack.
Durian Fruit:
The fruit of the tree, genus Durio has 30 recognized Durio species with at least nine producing edible fruit. These edible fruits are regarded as a delicacy, with some people declaring it to have a pleasantly sweet fragrance, whereas others find the aroma overpowering and unpleasant. The smell is universally known to be vile, it's persistent odour, which may linger for several days, has led to hotels & public transport in Southeast Asia to ban the fruit.
Conclusion:
The frame is crafted with precision and care, using the finest materials to complement the artwork and provide a luxurious finishing touch. The frame not only protects and showcases the artwork but also adds a touch of sophistication and refinement to any space it is displayed in.
That concludes our information sheet on Durian wood, our first framing material. We can almost guarantee we will provide you with another exceptional material on our next venture, but we must say... Durian wood will be hard to beat.
